National Park Passes - 1) The National Park Pass gives unlimited entrance into all National Parks in the United States for one year from the time of purchase. It also admits the cardholder into National Monuments and Recreation areas administered by the National Park Service. This includes Lake Powell, Cedar Breaks, and Pipe Spring. The cost is $50.00 and the pass is not transferable. It admits the owner and other passengers where per-vehicle entrance is charged. Where per-person fees are charged, it allows the owner, spouse, children, and parent admission. 2) The Golden Eagle Pass is sold for $65.00 and allows the buyer additional access to all federal fee areas. 3) The Golden Age Pass is a lifetime, one-time fee, for US residents only, aged 62 and older. 4) The Golden Access pass is a free lifetime pass for the permanently disabled and for US residents only. All permits can be purchased at any National Park entrance station, or on line for a service charge. The National Park Pass is cost effective if you are planning on visiting three or more parks on your trip (and remember it's good for one year in the US). For more information call 1-888-GOPARKS or visit their web site at www.nationalparks.org.
SHUTTLE SYSTEMS: Bryce National Park and Zion National Park's shuttle systems are operating, seasonally. This allows for better traffic flow through the National Parks. The shuttles will be free with paid park entrance fee.
CROWDS: If you are looking for less tourist traffic, please note that Fall is our area's busiest season. June, July, and August are actually less crowded.
TEMPERATURES: Please contact Zion National Park for weather information. If you are
concerned the weather is too warm. Remember, our humidity is less than 10%.
NORTH RIM: The North Rim of the Grand Canyon's facilities (Lodge, Restaurant, and Visitor Center) are open on May 15 and close on Oct. 15. The Park itself remains open for visitors until heavy snows close the road, which normally occurs in mid to late November. Summers are warm, but August visitation is low, and temperatures in the higher elevations are mild (Summer temperatures at Bryce and the North Rim are typically 10 degrees less than the lower elevation temperatures). Although caution should be exercised when hiking in the warmer months, August is still a great time to visit. The days are long, and you'll find fewer crowds.
RV's: RV'ers, if you are towing a vehicle behind your motor home, and plan on visiting Zion National Park, you can save the $10 escort fee by leaving the motor home in Kanab, Mt.. Carmel Junction, Mukuntuweep (a private trailer park at the east entrance to the park), or a number of RV parks located along Highway 89 north of Mt. Carmel Junction, and driving the passenger car into the park. RV's can drive through the park on Highway. 9. Traffic is stopped at either end of the tunnel to allow Motor Homes to drive down the center and to avoid oncoming traffic. There are restrictions for oversized vehicles, as follows: If your vehicle is 11'4" (3.4m) or taller, or 7'10" (2.4m) or wider, including mirrors, jacks, and awnings, you will need a tunnel escort. Vehicles that are prohibited from entering the tunnel: vehicles over 13'1" tall, semi trucks, vehicles weighing more than 50,000 lbs., single vehicles over 40' long, combined vehicles over 50' long, bicycles and pedestrians.
LAKE POWELL FEES: Entrance to the Lake, per car, per day, is $10. The National Parks passes are accepted at Lake Powell. However, if you plan to overnight at Lone Rock Beach, a fee of $6 is charged and is not covered by the National Park pass.
BACK COUNTRY: Backcountry travel, hiking, and exploring can be dangerous in the desert southwest. For detailed information on backcountry areas such as the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument, or the Paria/Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness Area, please call the Kane County Office of Tourism Visitor Center at (800) 733-5263. www.kaneutah.com
