STUDENT FILM
PRODUCTION INCENTIVE

Award and Guidelines

The Award:

  • Southern Utah Student Film Production Incentive:
    • Cash contribution $15,000 to $20,000

Required Matching Funds:

    • Student Filmmaker matching cash contribution $15,000 to $20,000
    • University matching cash contribution# $15,000 to $20,000
    • Minimum Budget Required for Submission to Program:  $45,000 to $60,000*

*Excludes distribution, exhibition expenses

# Grants, Scholarships, Travel money, Tuition Waivers, can count toward this requirement

Deadlines:

  • Submission Packet: February 29
  • Committee Selection and Ranking March 15
  • University Notification March 16
  • Principle Photography (PP) Must begin no later than Aug 1
  • Utah Premiere  15 months from completion (PP)

 

Submission Packet:*

  • Script in Screenplay form
  • Budget
  • Schedule
  • Letter of Support of the project from the Chair of the Film Department
    • Letter must address the understanding of the Film Department’s role in the projects supervision
  • Resumes of the following:
    • Faculty Advisor/Producer
    • On-Site Producer
    • Director (a demo reel may be requested by the Selection Board)

*No submission will be returned.

 

Script Guidelines:

  • Feature Length (90-120 min), Live-Action
  • Genre: Any (Drama, Comedy, Romance, Adventure, etc) (Documentaries will not be considered)
  • Western Theme (Any period; historical through contemporary.)
  • Completed film must adhere to the MPAA Guidelines for G or PG-13 rating

 

Project Supervision:

  • The university is solely responsible for all supervision of the student filmmakers during all phases of the project.
  • The university will assign a faculty member to serve as the advisor/producer to the project.
  • The university advisor/producer must make at least two on-site visits to the production while the project is in Kane County.

     

Southern Utah Student Film Production Incentive: Award and Guidelines

 

 Financial Guidelines:

  1. The university must provide evidence of insurance for the students and project ($1m coverage).
  2. The university must provide a designated escrow account for all funds (SUSFPI Award and matching funds).
  3. The first place university and student filmmaker must show proof of 50% of the matching funds deposited into the escrow account within 30 days of notification of selection. If not, the committee has the right to withdraw its offer and make an offer to the 2nd place university.
  4. If the requirement of the first 50% is met, the remaining 50% of the matching funds required of the student filmmaker and university must be deposited in the escrow account by 90 days after the date of notification of selection.

 

 

Production Guidelines

  1. The selected university must agree to enter into a completion agreement with the Kane County Film Commission.
  2. The final screen credit for the Southern Utah Student Film Production Incentive is to  read: exactly as provided by the Utah Film Commission
  3. The completed film must be submitted to at least 25 national and international film festivals and or markets. The Utah Premiere is to be held in Kanab within 15 months of final day of principle photography.
  4. The Director must attend the advance screening in Kanab.
  5. 75% of principle photography must be shot in Kane County, Utah.
  6. The student filmmaker (Director) must be enrolled as a full-time student (Graduate or Undergraduate) in the selected university’s film program.
  7. The Production Office must be located in Kane County during the portion of principle photography shot in Kane County.
  8. The production company must allow media access as requested by the Kane County Film Commission
  9. The production company must provide at least 3 public relations opportunities during the time they are based in Kane County.
  10. Kane County and Utah crew members to be given preference whenever possible.
  11. Kane County and Utah vendors to be given preference in any purchases of goods and services whenever possible.
  12. Within 60 days of the completion of principle photography the Student Filmmakers and Faculty Advisor will provide a written final report to the Advisory Board.
  13. Within  60 days of the completion of principle photography the Student Filmmakers will provide a digital photo record (stills) to the Advisory Board to be used for archive and promotion purposes.
  14. Student Filmmakers (either the Producer or Director) agrees to be an Advisory Board member for a one year term the following year after their project.
  15. The Student Filmmakers gives the SUSFPI legal right to show the film for promotional purposes.
